What is Documentary-Style Wedding Photography?
When you’re planning your wedding, choosing the right photographer and photography style matters because it shapes how the day will be remembered. Long after the wedding is over, the photos are what you return to when you want to recall how the day felt, not just how it looked.
If you’ve been exploring photography styles, you’ve probably heard the term documentary style wedding photography. But what does it really mean, and how is it different from more traditional approaches? Documentary style wedding photography is what I specialize in, and it’s all about keeping things as real as possible and letting your day unfold naturally.

Documentary wedding photography, sometimes referred to as photojournalistic wedding photography, focuses on capturing your wedding day as it naturally unfolds. Most moments are documented as they happen, with minimal interruption, so real emotions and interactions can take the lead.
Think about the big things—like the way your partner looks at you when they see you for the first time—and the small ones, like the way your grandmother’s hands rest on yours during a quiet moment. Those are the moments that tell the true story of your day, and they’re the moments I aim to capture.

How is Documentary Wedding Photography Different from Traditional Wedding Photography?
Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often leans heavily on posed shots, documentary-style photography is candid and unobtrusive. It is not about perfection or creating Pinterest-style images. Instead, it focuses on authenticity and photos that reflect how your day actually felt.
When people think of traditional wedding photography, they often picture carefully arranged group shots or recreated candid moments, such as the entire wedding party standing in a perfect lineup. While those photos can absolutely have their place, they do not tell the full story of your day. Documentary wedding photography allows you to stay present and enjoy your wedding without being constantly pulled aside for photos. I quietly capture the natural flow of events so every smile, tear, and laugh feels genuine.
With a documentary approach, you can spend your day fully immersed in the experience, knowing your photos will reflect the real moments as they happened.

Does Documentary Wedding Photography Mean No Direction Will be Given at All?
Absolutely not. I offer gentle guidance during portraits and group photos to make sure everyone looks their best and the images feel polished, while still staying true to how the day actually felt. You may also receive light direction during the getting ready portion of the day, especially to take advantage of flattering window light or to simplify the space so the focus stays on you and your interactions. I pay close attention to lighting and positioning so photos are flattering without feeling stiff or overly posed. Outside of those moments, my approach remains largely observational.
Rather than placing people into static poses, much of my direction focuses on movement and interaction. Simple prompts and gentle adjustments help keep things natural so the resulting images feel relaxed and genuine. If at any point you feel unsure or would like more guidance in front of the camera, you are always welcome to let me know. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and like yourself throughout the process.
What Can You Expect from a Documentary Style Wedding Photographer?
An Emphasis on Understanding What Matters to You
Before your wedding, I take time to learn what matters most to you and what you want to remember about the day. This might be meaningful family relationships, specific moments during the ceremony, or the overall atmosphere you care about preserving. Understanding these priorities helps guide where I focus my attention throughout the day.
A Low-Profile and Unobtrusive Presence
On your wedding day, my goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible. My second shooters and I work discreetly and move with intention, always mindful of where we are positioned. We do our best not to obstruct guests’ views for extended periods, especially during key moments of the ceremony and reception, so everyone can fully experience the celebration as it unfolds.
Story-Driven Wedding Day Coverage
I photograph weddings with the full story in mind, not just the major events. This means paying attention to transitions, in-between moments, and reactions that often become some of the most meaningful images. Together, these moments create a cohesive visual diary of how your day actually unfolded.
Portraits That Fit Naturally Into Your Day
While candid coverage is my priority, I do set aside time for essential portraits, including couple, wedding party, and family photos. These portraits can be captured during a dedicated session or naturally throughout the day, whenever the light and moments are right. I approach this part of the day efficiently, aiming to get the shots you want without taking more time than necessary. This ensures you are not pulled away for long stretches and can spend the majority of your wedding day connecting with family and guests instead of posing for photos.

Why I Love Documentary Style Photography
After photographing weddings for over 15 years, I have seen time and time again that the most meaningful photos are often the ones couples did not even realize were being taken. It might be a hug from a best friend after the ceremony, a parent quietly wiping away a tear during speeches, or a calm moment shared between the two of you amid a busy day.
My editing style reflects this same approach. It is natural and true to tone, preserving the colours and lighting of the day as they actually were. There are no heavy filters or artificial effects, just honest images that bring you back to your wedding day every time you look at them.
Choosing a documentary-style approach allows you to experience your wedding day fully while still capturing all the moments that matter. From quiet, emotional interactions to the laughter and energy of your celebration, these images tell the true story of your day and help you relive those memories for years to come.
